Learning to Play Bass Rocksmith

I Play Rocksmith 2011 Bass for 60 Days To Turn into a Bass God! (AMAZING RESULTS!!!)

Script:

[Plays Angela on Bass]

What a great song, and what a good game this Rocksmith is. Does playing it for sixty days turn me into a bass god up there with Geddy lee or Flea, or is it more of a game than a learning tool. Let’s find out when I play Rocksmith Original on the Bass for sixty days. As a side note, I did play this right after the guitar back in July. Playing guitar first meant that I was used to playing the strings more than I would be as a complete noob. Keep that in mind when seeing the before and after footage. Let’s get started, Slappers.

I had to purchase a bass for this game, so I got this Ibanez bass from amazon for around two-hundred dollars. This Bass is a lot better than the hundred-dollar guitar. I also got on amazon, and I feel like it works better with Rock smith than the guitar. I read that it could be an issue with the cheap strings or pickups on the guitar. If you want to start rocking out on Bass, then I highly recommend getting this Bass.

When I first started playing on the Bass, I progressed rather quickly. Many of the songs in this game are more for the guitar than Bass, so it is a big downside. Some songs, like the rolling stones playing with fire, don’t have a bass line, so you miss a few. There are not many songs that are just bass songs out there, so there are no additional songs to make up for it. Otherwise, the game is pretty much the same. You have the journey mode to play through the songs, and you have the techniques tab to learn more about playing the Bass. The mini-games are pretty much the same since many of the techniques from slides to harmonics are the same, no matter if you are a Bassist or a Guitarist. Possibly a ukuleleist as well. I actually never touched one before.

[Week 3 check-in]

There are a few techniques that are exclusive to bass players. The main one being slap and pop. A slap is where you hit the strings with the side of your thumb. A pop is when you pull the string underneath like so. That is the primary technique I need to work on once I return on Bass for Rocksmith 2014 Remastered. I am not too good at it. Unfortunately, there is not a ton of songs that include slapping and popping built-in. The main one being the Red-hot Chili Peppers higher ground. That song is by far the hardest one built into the game, so there aren’t many chances to pop and slap. I did buy some DLC songs for the game that include popping and slapping to help my technique. The main one being Maroon 5’s Misery. A great song from a bad that should have stopped after the second album. There isn’t a mini-game to play to learn Slap and pop, so you got to look elsewhere for practice.

That brings me to my big complaint with Bass in the original Rock smith. There aren’t that many songs. You can play as rhythm or lead guitar, which basically doubles the game size. With Bass, you only get one option. Bass. To help me get through the sixty days, I shelled out some money and bought a few DLC packs. If you are playing Bass, it is highly recommended you purchase the Rush song pack. It has songs, including Tom Sawyer and YYZ. Those are the most challenging bass songs in Rocksmith. It is highly recommended to purchase it to keep things interesting. I also recommend purchasing the Queen song pack as those bass lines are just iconic. My recommendation is to know if you are playing Bass in the original Rocksmith to keep in mind that you will need that DLC. I also did not use CDLC as Smithy’s Anvil is obviously no more and Customs Forge is mostly for the 2014 version. Besides, I want to see what this game has legally.

[Week 4 check-in]

As promised in the guitar video, here is what I purchased as DLC. I got the Avenge Sevenfold pack, Blink-182 3 song pack, Fall Out Boy Pack, Foo Fighters Pack, Maroon 5 Pack, Queen Pack, Rush Pack, and Rock Singles Song Pack. I liked all of the songs and recommended these plus additional song packs. If I wanted to buy more pieces, I would get the Nickelback song pack because I actually like their songs. Yeah, boo all you want! You know that I am right in the end.

To show my improvement here is me on the first day. And here is me on the last day. I went from playing single notes to playing double-stops and sliding all around. It’s not that much of an improvement when you are looking in, but It feels like a big one. My confidence in playing the Bass improved a ton from playing this game, and I highly recommend you all play it. I know that the 2014 version is out, but I recommend playing the original just to see the progress if you have the time. You can also only play sunshine of your love on this one, which makes it worth it to pick up in my mind.

Overall, while it didn’t turn me into a guitar god or even a slapper, it did raise my interest in an instrument. That interest can and probably will turn into a great hobby for me and a bunch of others. If you have never picked up the Bass, I recommend doing so along with the DLC packs I mentioned and start your new hobby today.

I won’t be doing what I want in a sequel for this game since there is an actual sequel already. Instead, let me tell you my absolute favorite songs to play on Bass. The song Me and the Bean by spoon are super fun to play as you descend through the strings. Of course, all the songs by Rush are fantastic. Higher ground is not only the most challenging song, but it is one of the most fun ones. All of the songs in the Avenge Sevenfold are just bangers to play. Lastly, the song islands by XX is another fun one to just slide all-around in.
